Canvas is a thicker cotton or linen fabric.  Named after it was originally used for ship sails.  Generally, plain weave is mostly used, and a small amount of twill weave is used. The warp and weft yarns are all made of multi-strand threads.  Canvas is usually divided into two categories: coarse canvas and fine canvas.
